We are at the peak of human evolution.
There are no more secrets to getting strong, building muscle and losing fat. We’ve uncovered the mechanisms behind physical transformation.
But modern man doesn’t reflect our advancements in science and technology. He has all the tools at his fingertips, but fails to understand their purpose, let alone their application.
This is the crux of aspiring athletes and fitness prospects. They’re overwhelmed by the noise. Picking up every scrap of information they stumble upon, stopping and changing course more frequently than a cab driver in Midtown Manhattan.
Jack of all trades master of none
The best athletes in the world aren’t fazed by outside occurences. They aren’t chasing the latest scientific revelation. They don’t jump from routine to routine hoping to find the one.
They understand that consistent progress in key areas is the road to mastery. And they follow a customized routine designed to fosterĀ consistent progress in these key areas.
They have a diet set up for them specifically.
They have a training regimen set up for them specifically.
They have a rest and recovery protocol set up for them specifically.
Nothing happens by chance. They’re programmed for success. All they have to do is follow the steps and grab the trophy.
You can hope for a better way, or you can go out there and create it.
Consistency over novelty
The best athletes drill the basics day in day out. At no point in their careers do they get “too good” to practice the essentials and hone their skills.
It’s not about reaching the next level by following a new protocol every month, using a different dietary strategy every week or targeting different muscle fibers every session.
It’s about mastering the basics. Perfecting one’s unique skillset, and progressing with baby steps. The overarching rules remain set in stone.
Whatever your current goals are, become proficient in executing the fundamentals. Focus on the little steps, the seemingly irrelevant improvements. Be it at your next meal or your next chest workout.
Master the basics for extraordinary results
You’ll never be too good to drill the basics.
You will never be too good to perform the fundamental movements. You’ll never be too ripped to eat balanced, nutrient dense meals. You’ll never be too advanced to warm up properly and follow a sound rest and recovery protocol.
I’ve been doing push and pull-ups consistenly for over 13 years. While I like to think that I’ve gotten pretty good at them, I haven’t perfected them. There are advanced variations I can’t pull off with immaculate form yet (i.e. one arm pull-up).
After all these years I can still milk these exercises for additional athletic and aesthetic benefits. I can still overload my muscles and force physiological adaptation with these very basic movements. There’s still room for improvement. There’s always room for improvement.
Mastering the basics:
- Perfect your nutrition
- Perfect your main lifts/ exercises
- Perfect your recovery protocol
Do not look for the holy grail of human fitness. There is none. Instead, look forĀ consistent progress in key areas.
