“Is this another one of those motivational articles to get me off my ass and into the gym?”
No. I am by no means your personal motivator. And I’m not going to give you a list of things you need to do to lose weight, build muscle, get that girl (or boy), and succeed in life.
Let’s be real here. If you you’ve been waiting for this day (Jan 1st) to radically change any aspect of your life, you’re probably not going to do anything when the time arrives.
Tough luck, huh? Well, just wait for next year then.
Screw that!
Now before we proceed, I need you to realize that I can’t babysit you through the process. You need to walk the walk by yourself. And you need to be willing to go through adversity to make it to your destination.
With that being said, I can offer you some helpful pointers to kick-start your new year’s revolution (that’s right I said “revolution“, I’m cool like that). So here it goes.
– Set goals and write them down. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve stumbled across this very piece of advice… and ignored it. But writing your goals down is a powerful success tool and greatly increases the likelihood of you sticking to the program. So don’t be as stubborn as I was and start setting goals and putting them to paper.
“What should I write down?”
Create short-term as well as long-term goals and be specific.
Write down short-term goals i.e.
- I will lose 4 kg in the next month.
- I will not eat any crap for 14 days.
- I will get in 3 workouts this week.
The short-term goals you write down should pave the way to your long-term goals.
Your long-term goals can look something like this:
- I will look like Brad Pitt in Fight Club by the end of the year.
- I will lose 12 kilos in the next 6 months.
- I will be able to do a one-arm pull-up by the end of 2016.
- I will be driving an Audi RS6 within the next 3 years (somehow one of my goals snuck in here, sorry about that).
- I will… you get the point. Get right to it!
– Train and eat according to your own goals. Don’t go on a 6-meals-a-day-low-carb diet if you want to lose weight while still enjoying life. Don’t train 7 days a week because “a guy at the gym” told you that’s what it takes to look good naked. Check out my articles on how to train and eat for a jaw-dropping physique and say goodbye to uncertainty and fitness confusion.
– Count your calories and macronutrients for 60 days. Regardless, if your goal is to lose weight or build muscle (or both). I want you to learn how much food your body needs to sustain itself. This is an eye-opener and will completely change the way you perceive your eating habits. Who knows, you might actually stop mindlessly shoving food down your throat every time you walk by your snack drawer.
– Do not compare yourself to others. NEVER compare yourself to others. You are on your own path and need to find your own answers. Don’t go on social media looking for answers. Trying to emulate Instagram models or YouTube celebrities will not help you in any way.
Start. Right. Now.
Not tomorrow, not in an hour, not after watching the final episode of whatever people are watching these days. RIGHT NOW! (I just yelled at my screen. This is how serious I am)
Go outside for a walk (or a run) today and clear your head. Come up with a personal battle plan. How do you proceed? How will you change your diet? How can you incorporate 3 training sessions every week? How can you be held accountable? What can you do right away to start the process? What obstacles have deterred you in the past? How can you overcome them? How do you make sure you don’t pussy-out like you always did when the going got tough?
When you get back home make sure to outline your plan and write it down. Give it some thought. The more detail the better.
Realize that the only thing it takes for you to reach your personal goals is you.
Also make sure to read my stuff on how to win at this fat-loss and muscle-building game. If you feel like you need more help, you can always come to me directly for nutrition and training advice.
No. You cannot wait until tomorrow. You need to start seeing yourself as a winner right away and act accordingly. Rise and shine, baby.
Thank you for reading
